Pharrell’s Signature Four-Count Musical Starts

In honor of Pharrell Williams’s 44th birthday, Genius looks back at the signature four count start he’s used throughout his decades long career. The beat pickup measure, which simulates a record skipping, has kicked off plenty of songs he’s worked on. Kelis’ “Milkshake,” his 2003 Jay Z collab “Frontin’” and 2004’s Snoop Dogg hit “Drop It Like Its Hot” are just a few of the many examples.

Check out the video above, hit play and listen to these amazing signature starts of amazing Pharrell produced records.

DJ Jazzy Jeff & The PLAYlist “Chasing Goosebumps”

The album was recorded in just 7 days with the entire process documented via Facebook Live.  Some of the world most renowned artists who contributed to the album were The Roots’ James Poyser, TDE’s new artist SiR, Eric Lau Masego, from the group Foreign Exchange Eric Roberson, and of course Dayne Jordan, and many more.

According to DJ Jazzy Jeff:

Chasing Goosebumps exemplifies the sincerity and soul-bearing emotion that only comes from unhindered creativity. Not genre-specific, the album is an eclectic, yet cohesive, mix of soul, funk, hip-hop, jazz, pop and samba. From the melodies to the lyrics, Chasing Goosebumps is moving and provocative, tackling topics like social injustice, relationships, love and the music industry. Vocalist Glenn Lewis serves as the perfect vessel for these stories of frustration, anger, hate, inspiration, love and hope. His distinctly familiar voice navigates the range of topics and music styles with effortless delivery.

Chasing Goosebumps is musically as diverse as the artists who brought it to life, The PLAYlist. More than a supergroup, The PLAYlist is a movement that promotes authenticity in music and empowers artists to remain true to their craft. For The PLAYlist, Chasing Goosebumps is reassurance that real, meaningful music is not a lost art. Chasing Goosebumps is not the end of an era. It’s just the beginning

What is Your Most Memorable President Obama Moment?

With his time in the White House coming to an end, I had the idea of what was a memorable moment that I could share.  I can remember like it was yesterday.  It was November 4th, 2008, my 27th birthday.  It was me, my mom(Rest in Peace mom), my dad, and my brother from another mother chuck p.  We were at Applebees and we were eating and waiting for the results.  Mind you this was my first time ever really voting.  You can feel the energy in the place.  Everyones eyes glued to the tv’s that were all around the place.  Then the final votes came in and the anchor says, Barack Obama is the 44th president.  Everyone one is standing and clapping.  There were some older people crying tears of joy, it was amazing.  I remember the text I got from one of my friends saying, you got a black president for your birthday.  That being said he will be missed and that is my President Obama moment.

Check out this video of others speaking on there most memorable Obama moment.

Netflix hasn’t announced any dates for the stand up specials, I have a feeling that this is going to a very highly anticipated release from the duo.  2017 is looking really good for Netflix.

Said to represent the rapid growth of the youth, the blazing tire depicts distractions and additional conflicts children face on an everyday basis. The latest project from Banksy was created using a stencil, spray-paint and freehand work which all help give it a sense of life. Banksy even gave them a thank you letter.

I want this game to be real!

One of the best scenes from the Star Wars prequel “The Phantom Menace” was without a doubt the pod race. One of the best combat-oriented racing games ever made was Super Mario Kart.

When you put the two together you know what happens?

Amazing happens.

This is a really well done video made by the folks over at Dark Pixel. You can tell a lot of love was put into the vid, as the CGI is incredibly well done, and they nailed the whimsical nature of the Mario Kart series.

This reminds me of all those times I would play this game at my cousins house. It also reminds me of how much I could hate those godddamn blue shells!!!!

Enjoy.

81 Remembered

“I thought I was dreaming the whole game to be honest with you.” – Kobe Bryant

Seems like yesterday Kobe served up a massive 81 points against the Toronto Raptors, becoming second the the great Wilt Chamberlin’s 100 point single game record.  It’s 10 years later and were gearing up to see the Black Mamba’s last NBA All Star Game, which happens to be in Toronto.  Seems like the perfect farewell right?  Watch the 5 part video from ESPN and like me be in awww of the amazing night Kobe had.

Kobe Bryant: I didn’t really pay attention to anything that was said. I was just in my own head and in my own zone. I wasn’t high-fiving anybody. I wasn’t talking to anybody. I just felt like I was in a different dimension. Nothing else mattered. Everything was irrelevant. I really wasn’t thinking about the scoring. I was trying to get us back in the game. We were down by 18 points in the third quarter. I remember at the end of the third quarter I had a steal and I had to hustle to keep the ball in bounds, and then I had a dunk and I said, “We’re in this game and we’re going to win this game.” That was the real turning point. Those are the plays that really change momentum — hustle plays. That’s when I knew we’re going to win this damn game.

Mitch Kupchak: Kobe was more than willing to have Phil back on board, and he worked incredibly hard preparing for that season. We had traded Shaquille the previous year, and Kobe had a chance to spread his wings and really just find out in his mind, and our minds, too, where historically he was going to end up. He could have been happy averaging 22 points per game, but this was an opportunity for him to blossom. He wanted to show the world how great he was.

Phil Jackson: I know people in [Los Angeles], particularly, like to see Kobe have a game like that; we all do. Kobe could have attacked if it was a game that was meaningful, flawless and had some competitive zest to it, but that 30-plus [lead] at that time, it wasn’t meaningful.

Like movies? Like Linkin Park? Have I got a treat for you!

This is, without question, the funniest thing I have seen in a while.

Back in the early 2000’s, a deluge of “Rap/Metal” bands hit the airwaves with thunderous guitars, pulsing drums, and turntable-twisting DJs. One of the more well known (and respected) groups was Linkin Park. Rapper Mike Shinoda’s flowing delivery coupled with singer Chester Bennington’s soulful screeching in front of a concrete-busting band was enough to give my Rage Against the Machine CD a break when I was in high school. Linkin Park’s first album, “Hybrid Theory” was a massive hit, with several top singles. One of those chart toppers was called “In The End” and some crazy bastard remade the ENTIRE SONG using clips from 183 different movies. One hundred eighty three.

I can not imagine the work that went into this video. The clips he chose and the timing of the words to the song are just hilarious, especially when you get to the song’s bridge that was originally sung by Bennington. If you have heard the original, this part will have you laughing! Check it out!

Pairing his previous tenure as an architect with his longstanding commitment to graffiti, Apex’s latest undertaking sees him paint a San Francisco office space. Inspiration/Motivation

I can remember watching this “Fade to Black” documentary for the first time.  I was in my apartment, just ripped off the packaging of the dvd.  Just recently purchased what was supposed to be Jay’s last album and I was geeked.  Ive been a fan of his since “Vol 2… Hard Knock Life”, had to go back and listen to the albums before to get some more history on Jay but that is for another post.  Back to this clip, at the time I was just starting to make music myself and also djing at the time.  Timbaland has always been at the top of my list of favorite producers right behind the great Dr. Dre.  Think I washed this portion of the video maybe 50 times back to back and was totally inspired to hit the keyboards, drum machine, and computer to get started.  The video gave me so much inspiration that I wanted to just be in the studio all the time and create music on the regular.  Watch the video clip above and I promise you if making music is what you love to do this will give a needed push to make you never wanna quit on that dream.
